CrossFit is one of the fastest-growing physical fitness trends in recent years, with CrossFit gyms popping up all over the world. CrossFit has become popular for its emphasis on high intensity workouts that focus on functional movements to improve overall strength and conditioning. CrossFit classes combine elements from weightlifting, gymnastics, running and other sports to create a challenging yet enjoyable workout experience that can be tailored to any level of fitness. Whether you're looking for an effective way to get fit or are already a seasoned athlete looking for something new, CrossFit could be just what you need. In this guide, we'll explore CrossFit basics - what it is, how it works and why it's so popular - as well as provide tips on getting started with CrossFit and finding success with your fitness journey!
1. What is CrossFit and is it for me?
CrossFit is a core strength and conditioning program. It combines elements from weightlifting, gymnastics, running and other sports into intense workouts that challenge the body and push it to its limits. The workout program is designed to optimize performance in each of the 10 fitness domains: cardiovascular/respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance, and accuracy. In short, CrossFit focuses on functional movements performed at a high intensity across time. CrossFit was founded in training elite military organizations, and has been used by major university athletic teams and professional sports. The science behind the practice has proven effective.
CrossFit is beneficial to everybody. The difference between an elite athlete and somebody just starting with fitness is more about the degree rather than the kind of exercise. We would not have your grandmother squat the same as a Division 1 athlete, but they both need to squat. Squatting is essential to maintaining functional independence and improving fitness. Squatting is just one movement that we train in CrossFit. Our coaches are there to help each person find their level of difficulty and push them to improve their overall fitness.
At Black Widow CrossFit we welcome all athletes. We have new athletes that are just beginning their fitness journey and athletes who are working to compete at the next level. Our programming and coaches help find the right stimulus and provide opportunities to improve across the fitness domains, no matter where you are starting from. Additionally, our Kids (ages 5-9 years old) and Youth (ages 10-15 years old) programs are designed to help our younger athletes build foundational movements and prepare for their next level of fitness.
2. Tips on getting started with CrossFit
Finding a CrossFit affiliate where you feel comfortable and have fun is the best way to get started. Each affiliate will prescribe a workout program with different workouts each day. The coaches and staff will help you through each exercise, providing feedback on movement and helping you to push yourself. Additionally, not only will the coaches ensure you are moving correctly, but they will help you adapt to any existing injuries. A qualified coach is critical to minimize the risk of injury and helping you to maximize your fitness.
Black Widow CrossFit recommends that you attend a minimum of 3 classes per week in order to see benefits from any exercise routine. This will help newer athletes adjust to the increased strain on their body while allowing time for recovery. Depending on your fitness goals, you may want to workout out more often. A qualified coach can work with you to identify what is ideal for you at your current level of fitness and desired fitness goal.
3. How to find the right CrossFit class or gym for you
Finding the right CrossFit class or gym is essential to your success in CrossFit and achieving your fitness goals. CrossFit gyms vary in their style of programming, coaching techniques and overall atmosphere, so it's important to find one that suits you best. When looking for a CrossFit gym, consider the type of classes offered, the experience level of instructors, the size of classes, and other amenities offered.
Black Widow CrossFit recommends trying out a class before committing to any gyms. We do not lock people into any long-term contracts, and allow cancellation at any time. Black Widow CrossFit fosters professional coaches, leverages expert programming from CrossFit, and fosters an inclusive atmosphere that supports all members in achieving their maximum level of fitness. Additionally, our Yoga, Kids, and Youth programs offer some great additional resources for families and those looking for complementary fitness options.
